Neuropsychological Testing Services
Neuropsychological Testing:
Most of the patients that we see at our office have never heard of clinical neuropsychology or neuropsychological testing services until they are referred for neuropsychological assessment by their neurologist or other medical doctor.
Neuropsychological testing services involves the assessment of a wide range of cognitive functions such as attention, focus, memory, visual-spatial perception, processing speed, language skills, judgment, and flexibility of cognitive functioning. In addition, we usually screen for possible psychiatric factors (e.g., depression, anxiety, stress) that may interfere with cognitive functioning.
The neuropsychological testing services involves face-to-face assessment with a friendly examiner. There may be one or two tests administered on the computer. However, patients are not hooked up to any equipment or instruments. Patients can take breaks as needed.
Clinical neuropsychology assessment or neuropsychological testing services can provide a wealth of information to referring physicians. Neuropsychological testing services are being increasingly included a part of the assessment of patients who have known or suspected neurological disorders. Often, a change in cognitive functioning may be one of the earliest signs of a particular neurological disorder.
Patients are often referred to assist with diagnosis or to rule-out a particular disorder. Common referrals include patients with memory difficulty, mild traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, HIV, dementia, learning disability, and others.
The testing can also help differentiate between an organic disorder vs. non-organic disorder (e.g., depression, anxiety, stress). For example, neuropsychological testing can help to determine if a patient’s memory difficulty is due to normal aging or psychological factors (stress, depression, anxiety) or to an early dementia.
Neuropsychological testing can help evaluate changes in a condition over time to allow monitoring of the effectiveness of a particularly treatment or to assess disease progression over time. Establishing a baseline at one point in time allows for a sensitive comparison to testing of the same patient at a later point in time.
Neuropsychological testing can assist in determining how a patient’s cognitive deficits may affect his or her ability to live independently, to follow medical recommendations, and carryout activities of daily living such as cooking, driving, and managing finances.
Neuropsychological testing may also be helpful in making decisions about returning to work or disability.
