John Largen was born in Tennessee and has lived in North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and New Jersey. Since 1975 he has been a “Texan by choice.”
Professional Background:
Dr. John Largen completed his undergraduate training at Rutgers College in New Brunswick, N.J. in 1973 followed by his Master’s degree at Montclair State College.
In 1975, Dr. John Largen began his Ph.D. training in the newly created Clinical Neuropsychology program at the University of Houston. This program was one of the first to specialize in Clinical Neuropsychology from the beginning of training and the Houston program went onto to become a model for neuropsychology programs around the country. Dr. Largen completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Neuropsychology in 1980. His dissertation examined regional cerebral blood flow in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
From 1980 to 1984, Dr. John Largen was staff neuropsychologist at the Texas Research Institute of Mental Sciences where he had clinical, research, and training duties in neuropsychology. This facility later merged into the Psychiatry Department of the University of Texas.
Dr. John Largen joined the Behavioral Medicine Department at Kelsey-Seybold Medical Clinic in 1985 and was their Chief Psychologist until 1989. Thereafter, Dr. John Largen went into private practice as a clinical neuropsychologist. Since that time, he has seen thousands of patients with a wide variety of neurological disorders.
In the late 1970s, Dr. John Largen assisted the families of Alzheimer’s disease patients set up the Houston chapter of the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association (now known as the Alzheimer’s Association).
Dr. John Largen was one of the founding members of the Houston Neuropsychological Society and served as its President in 1997 and also in 2003.
Dr. John Largen is also listed in the National Register of Health Services Providers in Psychology.
Clinical Interests:
Neuropsychological assessment of patients with dementing disorders, head injury, stroke, other neurological and psychiatric disorders. He also has a strong interest in learning disability.
In addition, Dr. John Largen is a consultant for the FAA and carries out neuropsychological testing of pilots and pilot candidates for the past several years.
